32 YEARS LATER – PAYLESS TRIPLE MURDER
SMPD Still Actively Investigating - Community Assistance Sought
On February 4th, 1979 three young men (pictured left to right-Tracy Anderson, Billy Baumgartner, and Michael Olson) were executed during the after hours robbery of the Payless Super Drug Store (now a Rite Aid), located on Concar Drive in the City of San Mateo. This tragic case remains unsolved.
Over the years this department has spent thousands of hours on this case investigation. In recent years, we have pored over original case notes and evidence, and generated and explored additional investigative information. This case remains open and active, and SMPD is in regular communication with the victims’ families to update them on the progress of the case. In our commitment to partner with the long-suffering families in pursuing closure, it is SMPD’s desire to keep this case fresh in the minds and hearts of the San Mateo Community. The San Mateo Police Department, as always, places the highest priority on open homicide cases, and will continue our investigation until the perpetrator(s) are identified and brought to justice.
There remains a $75,000 reward (which includes a $50,000 reward issued by the Governor’s Office) for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this heinous crime.
This incident occurred at what was the Payless Drug Store and is now Rite Aid at 666 Concar Drive in San Mateo on Sunday, February 4th, 1979 in the evening hours. Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the San Mateo Police Department at any of the numbers below:
