Community Awareness Information - Graffiti

Over the evening of January 28th, several incidents of graffiti occurred in the 19th Ave Park area of San Mateo. The graffiti appears to be gang related, and SMPD’s Neighborhood Response Team (Gang Unit) is investigating. Meanwhile, SMPD will have increased patrols in the area.

Know that the City of San Mateo takes an aggressive stance against all graffiti, and the SMPD works closely with Public Works and Parks and Recreation to identify and remove graffiti as quickly as possible. If you notice graffiti in your area, you are encouraged to contact Public Works at 650-522-7300, or visit the graffiti section of the City of San Mateo website: http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.aspx?nid=2154 for additional reference numbers if the graffiti is on a public utility or private property.

If you are a victim of graffiti, please contact the SMPD at 650-522-7700 or report the crime online: http://www.cityofsanmateo.org/index.aspx?nid=1183 .

SMPD is aware that there has been a recent rise in gang graffiti and gang activity countywide. Community members in the City of San Mateo have helped us to arrest a number of these perpetrators in the past by being excellent witnesses and reporters of crime. SMPD is counting on the community to be our eyes and ears. Please notify SMPD of in-progress crimes by contacting us via 911 or by our non-emergency number 650-522-7700.
