Advisory

Police Impersonator: 1/16/11 at 8:40PM. Dark unmarked car with flashing blue light on dash stopped resident.

West Manheim Twp. Police are investigating an incident involving a police impersonator that occurred Sunday January 16, 2011 at 8:40 p.m.

A West Manheim man was stopped on Pumping Station Road just off Baltimore Pike by a dark colored car described as similar to an unmarked police cruiser. The vehicle had a flashing blue light on the dash but no visible markings or exterior lighting.

The impersonator approached the man’s car telling him he was speeding and his vehicle matched the description of a stolen car. The man provided his license and registration to the impersonator who returned to his car for about ten minutes. He then returned the man’s documents and told him it was okay to leave. Finding the contact unusual the man went home and called West Manheim Twp. Police through 911.

The impersonator is described as a white male with a tan complexion approximately 6’ tall and 180 pounds with a thin moustache. He was wearing khaki shirt and pants and a jacket with gold stripes on the sleeves, a campaign style police hat and a belt with small pouches on it. There were no patches, badges or firearms displayed.

Typically police vehicles in Pennsylvania are equipped with red and blue lights and usually more than just one on the dash. Motorists who are signaled to stop by an unmarked vehicle and feel it’s suspicious may drive slowly to a lighted area, perhaps a business or parking lot where others are present. Keep the doors locked and open the window enough to communicate until the officers authenticity is confirmed. In addition to a uniform or jacket that bears the name of their department, the Pennsylvania Code requires officers in unmarked cruisers show official identification if requested to do so, as long as the request is reasonable and the police officer’s safety has been ensured.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Manheim Twp. Police at 717-632-7059.
