Theft from Vehicles Crime Trend

Tustin Police Department has been seeing an increase in theft from vehicles during the month of December.

All thefts have been at Preschools or Day Care Centers.

This is a notification to remind our residents how important it is to lock up their vehicles and close their windows whether it is for a minute or all day. We have found a number of thefts from vehicles where suspects are targeting purses in unlocked vehicles The incidents have been occurring between 7: 00am – 9:30 am or 4:00pm-7:00 pm. We believe that thefts have been occurring while the parents are either picking up or dropping off their children.

REMEMBER WHEN LEAVING YOUR CAR:

 Keep your vehicle doors and windows locked at all times.

 Never leave valuables in plain view, even if your car is locked. Put them in the trunk or at least out of sight, and do so out of sight.

 Take everything out of your car. Don’t leave cell phones, purses, wallets, packages, gym bags, or personal information such as (checkbooks, title) in your car in plain view.

 Park and walk in a well-lighted and busy area.

 And NEVER leave your car running or leave the keys in the ignition. Yes, cars have been stolen because a key was left in the ignition, and the car was running.

PARKING LOTS AND STRUCTURES:

Park in well-lighted and highly visible stalls. Stay away from stairwells, elevators, dumpsters, and any dark areas. It is important to remain aware of your surroundings. Notify maintenance if lighting needs repair. If you pay to park, just leave the ignition key with the attendant. Do the same when you take your car for repairs. Have your keys ready and try to keep your hands free of packages.
