For residents who commute every day by car and are looking for a little reprieve from garage parking fees, the City of Hoboken is now offering a new garage parking option called “Monthly Limited.” This option offers a reduced rate of $140/month for garage parking in city Garages “D” and “Midtown,” and $180 in city Garage “B.” This represents approximately 30% off the standard monthly rate; however, the reduced rate comes with a requirement that owners must remove their cars from the garage weekdays between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. For residents who commute daily by car, this requirement is relatively easy to meet. Nonetheless, each month, residents who park with the “Monthly Limited” option are granted two days in which they can be in the garage during the 10:00 am to 4:00 pm period. If these are not used during month, they can “roll over” and be collected throughout the year for various purposes, such as leaving the car in the garage while on a vacation.

While the benefits to commuting residents are valuable, the benefits to the City's parking problems are even more significant. By implementing this new option, the Hoboken Parking Utility can better utilize each parking space in city garages for more hours each day. This translates to more parking and increased revenue without building any new parking spaces. In fact, during the 6 month trial period that just recently ended, HPU generated approximately $39,000 in additional revenue and was able to provide parking for an additional 50 residents without building a single new parking space.

“In the year I've been here, we've reduced the Midtown Garage waiting list from 3 years and 200 people to 3 months and fewer than 30 people,” said Transportation and Parking Director Ian Sacs.

The announcement of "Monthly Limited" comes on the heels of two other popular new options recently announced by HPU in the past week and is part of a comprehensive rethinking of the way the city's parking facilities are managed. Last week, businesses were introduced to a new free permit option that can save employees over $1,000 per year, and residents were informed of the new "Vacation Spot" discount that makes it possible to park in a city garage while on vacation for $5/day.
