Suspect surrenders to LASD: 5700 blk. Mayflower, Maywood. Wanted for Florence/Firestone area kidnapping

At about 10:40PM Friday, a barricaded suspect surrendered after hours of effort by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies to convince him to give himself up.

Ultimately, no force was necessary to make the arrest.

Neighbors who had been relocated for their safety can return home.

The victim of the kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon has been released from the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

The incident began at about 4:00PM Friday, when witnesses reported seeing a woman walking down the street at 76th St. and Crockett Ave., in the unincorporated Florence/Firestone area.

A man drove up, got out of his car, hit the woman over the head with a hard object and forced her into his car. She fought her way out of the car, but he dragged her back into the car and drove away.

Concerned community members who witnessed the incident wisely noted the license plate number of the vehicle and provided it to responding Century Sheriff’s Station deputies.

At about 4:20PM, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the residence of the registered owner of the car located in the 5700 block of Mayflower Ave., Maywood. They found the victim alone inside the suspect’s vehicle near his residence. She was able to speak but suffering from a head injury. She said she did not know the suspect.

Another woman approached deputies and said a man whom she did not know had forced her out of her nearby apartment.

Deputies then worked for hours to attempt to communicate with the suspect in the apartment, until he was finally convinced to surrender.
