A man was arrested after allegedly attempting to hit his former girlfriend with his car in Pico Rivera Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies went to the 9300 block of Slauson Avenue at about 2:20PM to handle an assault with a deadly weapon call. The victim told deputies that she was walking on the sidewalk in front of "Burger Stop" when her boyfriend, 22-year old Francisco Hernandez, attempted to run her over with his vehicle. The car driven by Hernandez narrowly missed the victim as it jumped the curb, drove over the sidewalk, through the bushes, and into the parking lot of the restaurant.

The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle despite the fact that it had sustained two flat tires. His abandoned vehicle was located a short time later after a witness notified deputies of its location. Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station deputies located Hernandez a short distance away from his vehicle, and he was arrested without incident.

"Fortunately, the victim was not hit by the car or injured," said Captain Mike Parker, Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. She was provided victim assistance referral and restraining order information by deputies.

The suspect and victim have children together. Preliminary investigation indicates the motive for the assault was that the victim had turned down Hernandez' marriage proposal.

Hernandez was booked for assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle) at the Pico Rivera Sheriff's Station, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. His bail is set at $30,000.00
