PennDOT Warns Motorists to be Aware of Flooding or Ice

Allentown –Based on current weather forecasts, PennDOT is advising motorists traveling throughout east central Pennsylvania to be alert for potential flooding or ice in their travels over the next 24 hours.

“Motorists need to pay extra attention to their driving, especially on days such as today when weather conditions can change quickly and turn driving conditions sour in an instant,” said PennDOT District 5 Executive, Michael W. Rebert, P.E. “In addition to winter weather, forecasters are predicting conditions favorable for flooding and/or black ice.”

PennDOT reminds motorist to pay particular attention on elevated roads, ramps and bridges where black ice can form without warning. Black ice is a condition in which the roadway appears to be just wet, when in fact it is covered with a thin sheet of ice.

In addition to monitoring weather forecasts, motorists should pack an emergency travel kit containing some basic items like first aid supplies, non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, a blanket and a small snow shovel. An emergency travel kit should also contain items essential to specific passengers such as baby supplies, extra medication or pet food.

Because of the variety of winter conditions that this storm is producing, motorists may encounter flooded roads, downed trees or power lines. Motorists who encounter a closed road should turn around and seek an alternate route.

PennDOT encourages motorists to log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone before heading out to check traffic conditions.
