HIGHLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT has some important holiday safety tips for you!

The holiday season is here and with it come increased thefts and burglaries. Here are some important holiday safety tips:

-Report suspicious subjects/behavior/vehicles to the police immediately at 911

-Leave Lights, radios or TVs on timers when leaving your house for an extended time

-If traveling, make arrangements for your mail and newspapers to be picked up

-Contact your department to put your residence on a “vacation checklist” while you are out of town

-Have someone shovel your driveway and walkways

-Be aware of subjects coming to your door to do work or stating they are from the water department, etc., just to enter your residence

-Be aware of phone scams where subjects state they are from the Census Bureau , a court or a financial institution and request personal information

-Park an extra vehicle (if available) in your driveway.

-Take in your trash cans or your neighbor’s trash cans as soon as possible

-Do not shop alone (take a relative or friend)

-Do not carry large sums of money

-Do not carry all of your credit cards (take only the ones you will be using)

-Store your valuables in the trunk out of the view of suspected thieves

-Park in a well lit parking lot or near a light

-Lock your vehicle

-Remove any valuables from the interior of your vehicle (coins, radar detectors or GPS units)

-Be aware of suspicious subjects approaching you and asking for personal information or advising they just found a large sum of money and need your help

-Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times

-Do not leave your purse unattended in your shopping cart while shopping or placing your purchases in your vehicle

-Do not carry your purse hanging down where subjects can drive by and “hook” your purse or grab it from you
