The North Richland Hills Police Department in joining with communities across the nation in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In the police department lobby stands the “Red Lady” statuettes. A solemn reminder and silent witnesses to the affects of Domestic Violence and the toll that it takes on families across the nation. North Richland Hills Police Department and Crime Victim’s Liaison, Christi Garcia, have arraigned for the display to stand from October 25th through the 29th in honor of the victims of domestic violence.

In 2009, Texas lost 111 women due to Domestic Violence. The Red Ladies are a reminder that these crime victims have not been forgotten and live as a reminder of their tragic loss. The Red Ladies represent two such victims of domestic violence from our own community.

• Donna Wilhite was 65 years old when she was shot by her husband, Freddie Wilhite, in 2007. Donna had endured years of abuse at the hands of her husband. Freddie Wilhite is currently serving 30 years in prison for her murder.

• Kristin Jones died as a result of an ongoing domestic violence episode in 2009. Kristin was shot to death by her daughter’s estranged boyfriend before he then committed suicide.

The display will contain information to educate the community of the resources available to prevent domestic violence and to assist victims.
