Holiday Decorating

The Columbia Fire department wants you to have a fire safe holiday season by taking the following precautions:

• Make sure that any electrical items you purchase are UL approved.
• Make sure Christmas trees are kept away from heat sources.
• Keep live Christmas trees well watered.
• Use approved lights for your tree. Use indoor lights inside and outdoor lights outside.
• Do not overload electric outlets or over use extension cords.
• Do not run electrical cords under rugs and carpets.
• Inspect light strings carefully for cracked sockets, frayed, bare wires, and loose connections.
• Turn lights off before going to bed.
• Do not block hallways and exits with decorations.

Candle fire safety tips:

• Blow out all candles before you leave the room or go to bed.
• Use solid candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.
• Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.
• Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
• Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
• Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
• Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage.
• Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
