Cops Nab Pick-Pocket Before Victim Knows Her Wallet is Gone

Chief Chip Stalter announces the arrest of Carlotta J. Alston, 51, currently of Sanford Street in East Orange,
and formerly of Newark, New Jersey, for several felony counts of credit card theft and fraud. This arrest
stemmed from an investigation conducted by Police Officer William Diedtrich and Police Officer Jeff
Angermeyer.

On Sunday afternoon, October 17, 2010, at approximately 2:55 p.m., Police Headquarters was telephoned by
the King’s Supermarket staff, reporting that a woman uttered a revoked credit card while trying to purchase
more than $200 of cigarettes. She suspiciously left the store with the revoked credit card and was likely still
nearby. Police Officer William Diedtrich and Officer Jeff Angermeyer were dispatched to the area and given a
detailed description of the suspect via police radio. Once inside the parking lot, they intercepted Carlotta J.
Alston who was in possession of five credit cards, all of which were bearing someone else’s name. Alston
was arrested and transported to Police Headquarters without incident.

Further investigation revealed that Alston pick-pocketed a Hillsdale woman who was shopping at the Hillsdale
Shop Rite, approximately 30 minutes prior to the initial report made by the King’s Supermarket staff.
Unbeknownst to the victim, Alston had taken her five credit cards and was attempting to make purchases, first
at the Shop Rite and then at the King’s Supermarket, among other locations. All the while, the victim was still
shopping and unaware of the theft. Similarly, Alston was unaware that the credit card company’s automatic
fraud detection systems had already revoked the credit cards because of the unusual spike in usage and in
such a brief period of time.

The police officers finally met with the victim and gladly explained to the resident that her credit cards were already recovered and Alston was already in their custody. As a result of the investigation, Alston was
charged with Use of a Stolen Credit Card, a crime of the third degree, Credit Card Fraud, a crime of the third
degree, Theft [of credit cards], a crime of the fourth degree, and Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card, a crime of
the fourth degree. In lieu of $20,000 bail (with a ten percent option), Alston was transferred to the Bergen
County Jail where she will be arraigned by a Superior Court judge in the new jail courtroom.

Chief Stalter states that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He
commended the swift response of Officer Diedtrich and Officer Angermeyer. Further, Chief Stalter believes
that this latest incident is a valuable reminder that crimes of opportunity can occur anywhere and at anytime.

Carlotta J. Alston was apprehended by Hillsdale Police Officers William Diedtrich and Jeff Angermeyer on Sunday,
October 17, 2010, shortly before 3 pm, following a report from the King’s Supermarket the Alston uttered a stolen
credit card at the point of sale. Their investigation revealed that Alston pick-pocketed a woman’s wallet at the Hillsdale Shop Rite and was uttering the victim’s credit cards at several establishments in town.
