Thanksgiving is the most heavilly travelled holiday period. Please drive responsibly and Buckle-Up.

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that over 90% of Americans will travel by car to reach their destination, making Thanksgiving the most heavily travelled holiday period.
Sadly, Thanksgiving is also our nation’s deadliest holiday period. Last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 389 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes. Of those, 55% were unrestrained. Many of these needless deaths could have been averted by simply buckling up.
We would like to remind everyone that our vehicles today have a Safety Restraint System (SRS). The seatbelts are designed to work with the airbags. Upon impact the airbags deploy in nanoseconds, with a tremendous amount of thrust. The bag must inflate and be in the process of deflating at the time the occupant makes contact with the bag. If the seatbelt is not worn, the occupant is thrust into the bag while it is inflating. This can result in very serious injury. The seatbelts and airbags working together provide your best opportunity to survive a crash.
Please take the time to buckle-up. “It does make a difference”.
The Tellico Plains Police Department would like to extend our very best wishes for a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.
