Enrollment Now Open for New Citizen’s Police Academy

HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office today announced enrollment is open for two upcoming classes of the BCSO’s Citizen’s Police Academy. High School seniors and adults from Bergen County are eligible to participate.

“We are excited to once again offer our popular Citizen’s Police Academy for adults and high school seniors,” Bergen County Sheriff Leo P. McGuire said. “The academy gives participants a better understanding of and appreciation for the important public safety role that law enforcement plays in the community.”

The BCSO’s Citizen’s Police Academy is a nine-week course that is designed to educate participants on the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the role it plays in Bergen County. The Academy is offered in a classroom-style format with periodic demonstrations of equipment and tactics used by real officers.

Participants will learn about the tools and strategies officers use in a broad range of areas including homeland security preparedness, the Medical Examiner’s Office, gang violence awareness, homicide investigations, K-9 patrol and detection, criminal investigations and ballistics.

The high school police academy class will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The general adult police academy class will commence on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. Both groups will meet once a week.
