I wanted everyone to be aware that we are getting compliants from several areas of ACC regarding door to door magazine subscription sales. There are strong indications that some of these individuals may be conducting fraudulent solicitations. Anyone doing door to door sales in ACC should have documentation that they have a business license from ACC. The below description of the activity was provided by Det. McCauly and is based on a recent case that he has worked. Anyone encountering suspicious individuals relative to this advisory should call 911 so that we can check them out.

I wanted to let the uniform patrol officers to be aware of a scam that is currently going on in the Athens area. On 10/27/09 a report was filed at the east precinct in which a young (college age) white male knocked on the door of a resident on Holly Falls Drive, which is in the Tanglewood Subdivision. The male was claiming to be selling books and magazines for a company on the internet called MYDYNASTYSALES.COM. The suspect told the victim that he lived nearby and provided his parents names and address. The suspect told the victim that he was a UGA student and that he was selling the books in order to go on a trip to London. He asked the victim if he could come inside to show his selection. He then used the victim's bathroom. After the suspect was finished, he refused for the victim to give him a ride home. The victim wrote a check to this business to pay for his subscriptions, which he later put a stop payment on. After the suspect left, the victim did some research. He learned that the parents' did not live where the suspect said they did. He looked online and found several complaints about this company scamming people. The money was being received, but no magazines were being sent. The victim described the male as about 5'08, 150 pounds, clean shaved, gelled, short blonde hair, with blue eyes. He was dressed like a student at UGA and was very polite.
