WALKING OR BICYCLE RIDING TO SCHOOL

It is back to school, and the Tustin Police Department would like to offer you some reminders when it comes to your children walking and/or riding back and forth to school. All of us want our children to be safe.

IF YOUR CHILD IS WALKING….
Parents, please check out the route you wish to have your children use to and from school or the bus stop. Have your children walk the route with you.

While walking the route together, point out the traffic signals and signs. Make sure your children know to cross at the cross walks and look left, right, and left again before crossing.

It is important for children to watch for vehicles that might turn. It is important for children to pay attention to their surroundings and not to be distracted by cell phones, IPODs, conversations, etc.

When walking or riding paying extra attention in bad weather because drivers have trouble seeing and stopping.

Go directly to and from school or the school bus stop. The “buddy system” helps keep your children more safe.

If your child must walk after dark, you child should wear something reflective or light-colored and carry a flashlight or light stick.

IF YOUR CHILD IS RIDING A BIKE.....
Make sure the bike is in good riding condition. Check the wheels, tires, seat, reflectors, brakes, handlebar, and chain.

If your child is under eighteen, and they are not wearing a helmet, it is a violation of the law. For their safety, they should always wear a helmet with the strap fastened. It should fit snugly on one’s head and rest securely on the forehead (not too far back and not too far forward). Helmets should be worn on all wheels (skateboards, roller blades, etc.)

Their bike basket should not be overloaded, and their hands should be on their handlebars.

Riding double is a “no-no!”

Ride single file as far to the right side of the road as possible and ride in the same direction as the cars. Obey traffic signs and use hand signals and make sure your children understand them.

If you live in Tustin, and your bicycle is not licensed, you can bring your bicycle to the Tustin Police Department in order to obtain a bicycle license. Your bicycle must have a serial number or you can engrave a number into the underside of the bike frame where the pedals are located. You must bring an I.D. showing you live in Tustin. The license is free.

The Tustin Police Department wishes you and your children a safe and happy school year.
