On August 4, 2010 at approximately 8:45 pm, deputies form the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff Station responded to a call of a burglary in progress. As the deputies drove up to the residence they were flagged down by one of the victims. The victim directed the deputies to an area near the residence of the crime, where a possible suspect was hiding. The suspect was located and detained. A subsequent field investigation revealed that the suspect was confronted by the victim in his residence during the commission of the crime. A struggle ensued in which both victims were assaulted. The suspect eventually was able to flee the residence and attempted to hide in order to elude capture by law enforcement. One of the victims immediately called 9-1-1 and the other responded outside the residence in order to direct law enforcement to the last seen direction of the suspect. On August 18, 2010, Suspect Karslen pled guilty to (1) one count of residential burglary and was sentenced to six years in state prison. Although the victims received minor injuries during their confrontation with Suspect Karlsen, the additional aggravated assault charges were not instrumental in the suspect’s plea.

When deputies contacted the suspect, he gave them inconsistent statements, as to what he was doing in the neighborhood. The individual, identified as Suspect Karlsen, was detained and later admitted his involvement in the burglary to detectives.
