CITY TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION TOOLS

Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. will sign off on a new contract with Blackboard Connect CTY to improve the citywide communication system. The new system, which is expected to be fully up and running by the end of the month, will replace the city’s outdated emergency notification system. Blackboard Connect’s system will revolutionize how the city will communicate with residents and businesses.

With advances in communication technology the Mayor hopes this will not only improve the city’s emergency notification capability, but also improve the way departments can communicate with residents. “This new system,” states Mayor DeMaria, “will allow us to help keep residents, businesses and organizations up to date on street repair, snow emergency information, water main breaks, and also be used as a tool to promote citywide events.”

The new system will allow residents to sign up to receive communications on their home phone, cell phone, text message, and by way of e-mail. The new system also incorporates a social networking function, so folks can use Facebook© and Twitter© to receive messages as well. Blackboard Connect’s system relies on a web-based application where one message can instantly be communicated to the entire city, within seconds.

The Mayor anticipates the new system, along with the City’s website, to be an information hub. “We have an electronic newsletter, and our free Nixle© system to alert residents,” states Matt Laidlaw, Director of Communications, “ this new system will roll all of the services together, so we can communicate quicker, in multiple languages, and through multiple devices.”

The city will update residents on the details, including how to sign up for all related services at the end of the month, once the system is in place and training is complete.
