BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS

According to the F.B.I. Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report for the year ending 2009, the average rate of residential burglary in California cities, populations of 100,000 or above, was 60 burglaries per 10,000 population. For the Carson Station jurisdiction (Population 122,858) the rate of burglary was 51 per 10,000 population.

Although the City of Carson, and it’s adjacent unincorporated areas, are extremely well patrolled and relatively quiet, the occasional residential burglary still occurs in these areas. Detectives from the Carson Sheriff’s Station work hard to pursue leads and solve these crimes. You can discourage burglars by following a few simple burglary prevention tips that will make your home more difficult to enter.

Make your home look occupied, and make it difficult to break in.

Lock all outside doors and windows, even second story windows, before you leave the house or go to bed.

Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers.

Keep your garage door closed and locked.

Do not allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers and flyers build up while you are away.

Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are gone for an extended time.

Check with a locksmith to ensure adequate security for windows and sliding doors.

Always lock your garden sheds and garages.

Never leave notes on your door such as “Gone to the mall.”

Change your locks immediately if your keys are lost or stolen.

Have adequate exterior lighting. A motion detector light is recommended for back and side yards.

Trim trees and shrubs so they cannot be used as hiding places for intruders.

If possible arm your home with an alarm system.

Never leave keys under doormats, flowerpots, mailboxes or other secret hiding places. Burglars know where to look.

In the event you do find your home broken into, do not enter as the suspect may still be inside. Use a neighbor’s phone to call deputies right away. Do not touch anything or clean up until the scene has been investigated.

Above all, please be vigilant. Take note of any suspicious pedestrians or vehicles in your neighborhood. Burglars commonly walk the street and knock on doors during the daylight hours. When no one answers the door, they look for a way to break in. If something strikes you as suspicious, call the sheriff’s department immediately. It is often too late once a crime has occurred.
