Wednesday July 28th, 2010 :: 12:41 p.m. CDT

On July 26, 2010 at approximately 7:00pm Orland Park Police received a report of a suspicious male in the Marley Creek subdivision. The caller indicated the suspicious male approached five boys ages 12-14 in 11200 block of Twin Lakes Drive. The male subject asked the boys for money so that he could make a phone call because his truck had broken down. The boys notified a parent at the home who then spoke to the male and eventually provided him five dollars and the male subject walked away. The male was described as white, 40-50 years of age, short blondish hair, scruffy looking, wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans shorts, white socks, and white gym shoes.

While police were searching the area for the subject another resident in the 18100 block of Autumn Ridge called and reported that a male subject had approached his 9 year old son and asked the boy if he could speak to his father because he was selling a Jewel gift card. The father later spoke to the male subject who tried to sell the father a gift card. The male said he was just looking for some money. The father said the male appeared to be homeless and was acting strangely. The male then left the area and the father notified police.

Orland Park Police were provided information from a resident who said that while researching the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry, they located the photograph and name of what appeared to be the suspicious male that was seen on Twin Lakes Drive. That subject was a registered sex offender who lived in an adjacent jurisdiction.

With that information Orland Park Police picked up the registered sex offender at his home on July 26, 2010 at 10:00pm. That subject was interviewed by police and later released when it was determined he was not involved in this incident.

Investigators developed a lead on the identity of the male and were actively searching for him. On July 28, 2010 at 2:20am Mokena Police located the male at 191st. and Lagrange Rd. and he was subsequently turned over to Orland Park Police. The male was interviewed by investigators and he admitted to being homeless and being in the Marley Creek subdivision, as well as surrounding commercial businesses, on July 26, 2010, asking for money. The male, 51 years of age, is well known in the Mokena area and periodically stays at shelters and a residence in Mokena. The male was subsequently released without charges. Initial information was circulated that the suspicious male was a registered sex offender and was attempting to lure the children away from their homes, but after extensive follow up investigation it was determined not to be the case, and only a homeless person soliciting donations.

The registered sex offender who was initially questioned had no involvement in these incidents.
