Does Your Home Need to be Modified Due to a Disability?
If you answered yes and you live in the City of Rockford, you may be able to eligible to receive up to
$40,000 to complete the necessary modifications and to ensure your home meets the City of Rockford local code.
The City of Rockford Community & Economic Development Department received a grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) in the amount of $120,000. This grant, along with $200,000 of HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program Federal dollars, will assist eight (8) homeowners who are either elderly and/or persons with disabilities. Eligible households include those with incomes at or below thirty percent (30%)* of the area median income. At least half (1/2) of the homeowners will be seniors (60 years of age and older). The necessary modifications to the home must be identified by a physician.
A goal of IHDA is to prevent and end the unnecessary institutionalization of senior citizens and persons
with disabilities by funding repairs needed to their existing housing. The grant applicants were encouraged to combine funds with community reintegration, home service, enhanced transition and community care programs. IHDA also encouraged partnerships of housing and service agencies to affect a more viable and accessible living environment for the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging (NIAAA), an area agency on aging, and Regional Access Mobilization Project (RAMP), a center for independent living, will have the initial contact with homeowners who may qualify for the program. Both agencies have information on this program and other resources available throughout the community.
