It’s Summer Storm Season!

The Vineland Office of Emergency Management offers the following information to keep you safe from summer storms.
Before the Storm
Remove rotting or dead trees and branches which may fall and cause injury or damage.
Apply the 30/30 rule. Go indoors if you see lightning and cannot count to 30 before you hear the thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
Postpone outdoor activities.

During the Storm
Secure items that could blow away or cause damage. As the storm approaches, get inside a home, building or hard top automobile.
Avoid showering or bathing. Plumbing and metal fixtures can conduct electricity.
Cordless and cell phone are safe to use. Use corded phones for emergencies only.
Unplug appliances, computers and air conditioners.
Battery-operated radios and NOAA Weather Radios will provide updates and information from local officials.
Avoid isolated trees in open areas, hilltops, the beach, isolated sheds, tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs and bikes-anything with metal.
If you are in a forest and cannot get to your car, take shelter in a low area under a thick growth of small trees.
Boaters should get to land and find shelter immediately.
If you feel your hair standing on end, lightning is about to strike. Squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet. Place your hands over your ears and your head between your knees to make yourself the smallest target possible. Do not lie flat on the ground.
If someone is struck by lightning, immediate care must be provided when safely possible. Call 9-1-1. The victim’s body will not retain an electrical charge. Check for breathing, pulse and begin rescue breathing or CPR as appropriately needed. Monitor victim’s condition.

Additional information is available by contacting the agencies, such as the Red Cross, which provide first aid and CPR training. Online information is available by visiting www.fema.gov or www.ready.gov. Vineland residents may call 856-691-4540.
