Michigan Fireworks Laws

The Harper Woods Police Department wishes for everyone to have a safe holiday weekend. Please remember that Michigan Law MCL 750.243a prohibits the sale, possession, transportation and use of most fireworks, including firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles. Basically, if the firework is propelled in the air or explodes, it is ILLEGAL. The only legal devices permitted are snap-pops, smoke devices, sparklers, toy snakes and cone/cylinder fountains that shoot sparkes from a stationary position. All fireworks are prohibited for use in all of the City's parks.

Even the use of legal fireworks can be extremly dangerous and they should never be handled by children without direct adult supervision. Burns from sparklers are some of the most common injuries seen at hospitals from all across the country. The average sparkler can reach temperatures of over 1,800 degrees. Please have a charged hose line available when setting off legal fireworks and leave plenty of room from houses, garages and cars. In the event of a fire, contact your local Police/Fire Department immediately.

If you have any questions or if you wish to report illegal fireworks, please contact the non-emergency number at (313) 343-2530.
