1 Community Message (CM): Vacation Safety Tips

TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR VACATION!

Before you go on vacation, read these tips to make your trip safe and to keep your home secure while you’re away.

Before you Go

 Slim down your wallet for vacation. Carry only the credit cards and identification cards you will need. Secure all other cards at home. For the cards you carry, make a copy with the 800 number in case you need to report it lost or stolen. Notify your credit card company if you are traveling out of the country.

 Keep copies of credit cards and passports separate from the originals.

Prepare Your Home

An empty house is a tempting target for a burglar so make sure you do your best to have your home look occupied while you are away. Here is a list of tips to help you:

 Install good locks on the doors and windows and use them.

 Place your inside lights, television or a radio on timers so that they go on and off, periodically in the evening hours.

 Engrave your valuables with your drivers’ license number and place Operation Identification stickers on your entry door and front window.

 Never leave a house key hidden outside of your home. Crooks can spot a fake rock just as easily as you can. Stop all deliveries or arrange for someone to pick up your mail, newspapers, and packages.

 Place your garbage cans out of sight. Empty garbage cans are a sign that you are not at home.

Once You’re There

 Be aware of your surroundings and never advertise your plans or itinerary (especially on social networking sites), including your travel route.

 Do not stop to assist stranded motorists. Instead use a cell phone or go to the nearest pay phone to call assistance for them.

 Use ATMs in banks or in well lit areas.

 Always lock your car and remove ALL valuables. Park in well-lighted, busy areas.
Hotel and Motel Security

 Use the security door locks when in the room.

 Never leave money, credit cards, or car keys in the room. Always keep them with you or use the safe provided by the hotel.
 Report any lost or stolen items to the hotel/motel management and the local police.
 If you see any activity that you believe is suspicious, notify hotel/motel security or management staff.
Sight Seeing

 Select tour guides carefully. Use only official guides or request the hotel make arrangements with a local guide service for you.

 Check with the hotel/motel staff to learn about areas in town that should be avoided.
