Thousand Oaks Police to Increase Bicycle Safety Enforcement
Nature of Incident: Thousand Oaks Police to Increase Bicycle Safety Enforcement
Location: Thousand Oaks
Date: June 25, 2010
Unit Responsible: Thousand Oaks Traffic Bureau
Narrative: The Thousand Oaks Police Department’s goal is to reduce the number of traffic collisions involving bicyclists. The number of traffic collisions involving bicycles and the number of injuries related to bicycle collisions in the City of Thousand Oaks has increased over the past several years. In the majority of cases, the bicyclist was either riding in the wrong direction or making an unsafe turning movement, which caused the collision.
The City has implemented “Sharrows,” a road lane marking that shows a stencil of a bicyclist with two chevron markings above it, on several of the most traveled streets in the city. These sharrows are intended to help make motorists aware of bicyclists and to help reduce wrong-way riding.
On June 28, 2010, the Traffic Bureau will begin focusing enforcement efforts on all bicycle violations within the city in hopes to reduce the number of bicycle-related traffic collisions.
