Advisory

Increase in Vehicle Burglaries due to purses, laptops, etc left visible in cars.

Over the past month, there has been a spike in Vehicle Burglaries between Santa Monica Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard between Bundy Dr and Sawtelle Blvd.

The primary reason these vehicles are burglarized is because vehicle owners leave items of value in plain sight in their parked vehicles. Our analysis revealed that items most commonly left in plain view are laptops, GPS devices, IPODS, purses, and sunglasses. This is an open invitation to crooks to smash vehicle windows and take property.

We recommend you take the following steps to make your vehicle less attractive to thieves:

• Do not leave your laptop, GPS, IPOD, purse, sunglasses or any other property in your vehicle.
• Always use your vehicle’s alarm system.
• Do not leave garage remotes in your vehicle.
• Check on your vehicle periodically.
• Always lock your vehicle and close your windows.

One of the primary target of thieves is vehicles parked in secured subterranean garages. Vehicle owners of vehicles parked in secured subterranean garages should not get a false sense of security and leave items in their vehicles.

If you see any suspicious activity near any vehicle, call the police.
