Saginaw Township, MI Police Department
Tuesday June 15th, 2010 :: 02:51 p.m. EDT

The Saginaw Township Police Department would like to remind residents to be cautious of phone scams being reported in the area.

Locally, residents have reported receiving calls from persons offering large cash prizes. In order for the "winner" to receive their winnings, they are being asked to wire small sums of money to cover processing fees. The scammers are making repeated calls to their victims and providing various addresses as well as contact names.

Another phone scam taking place has the scammer claiming to be a law enforcement official in another state and in some instances, Canada. The caller says that a relative of the victim has been arrested and is in need of money for legal fees or bail. Some calls have been elaborate enough to have an actor pose as the relative, crying or hysterical then passing the phone off to a second and sometimes third voice that tries to lure the victim into sending money by wire transfer.

Similar reports have been made to law enforcement agencies in neighboring counties. Residents are cautioned that it is not standard practice for jails to demand wire transfers for bail or legal fees.

If you receive such a call, please contact us via 911 and we will try to verify that you are being given truthful information.

Residents are reminded of the old saying that if something seems to good to be true, it probably is.
