Good afternoon to all crime watch members and citizens of Upper Macungie Township.

Summer is right around the corner. The school days are coming to an end and most families will be going on vacation. A recent crime meeting in the Lehigh Valley shows that residential burglaries are on the rise.

The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police remind everyone if you are going on vacation; we offer a vacation vigilance check on your residence. Please go to our web site www.blrpd.org , click on Vacation Check and fill out the information requested. Once you are completed with the form it will be forwarded to our office and assigned to a patrol officer to check your house periodically. This will provide you with peace of mind while you are away enjoying time with your family. When you return home, simply call the police department or Lehigh County Communications to cancel the vacation check.

The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is dedicated to the youth in Upper Macungie Township . As a parent myself, I realize kids today grow up in a more complex society and are influenced with what they see and hear on television, play in video games, listen to in music, and so forth. The reality of all this sometimes provides them with a false sense of our way of life and leaves them unsure when they are troubled on who to trust.

The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is proud to sponsor the 2nd annual Junior Police Academy which will held August 02, 2010 through August 06, 2010, The class size is limited to 40 applicants and children must be at least 12 years of age to participate and no older than 16 years of age. This is a good chance to understand the world of policing. The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department is now taking applications. Fill out the application and return it to the listed address by July 12, 2010.

BLRPD Tip for July 04, 2010
The Pennsylvania law governing fireworks is to help reduce the risk of injury and fires during the weekend holiday. The Berks-Lehigh Regional Police will be enforcing these laws. Please do not become one of the statistics on this holiday weekend. Below I have provided an overview of what is legal in the State of Pennsylvania.

CONSUMER FIREWORKS
Specifically Permitted Sparklers, toy pistols, or other devices in which paper caps are used which contain .25 grains or less of explosive compound, and are constructed so the hand cannot come into contact with the cap when in place for the explosion. Also permitted are toy cannons which operate on the principle of mixing calcium carbide, weighting less that 1/10th ounce and water in the reservoir of the cannon, and in which ignition results upon the creation of a spark.
Specifically Prohibited Any combustible or explosive composition prepared for the purpose of producing a visible or an audible effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration or detonation. This includes, but is not limited to, firecrackers, skyrockets, roman candles, aerial fireworks, or other fireworks of like construction, and any fireworks containing any explosive or flammable compound.



Finally, in the fall of 2010 we will be offering cyber safety classes for your teenage sons and daughters which will provide them with information on topics such as cyber bullying, and protecting them using Facebook , You Tube and Myspace .
