Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council Awards $5,500 to Area Organizations


Rockford, IL. May 11, 2010 - The Rockford Mayor’s
Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) awarded $5,500 in grants to four area organizations in the new “MYAC Grants for Community Youth Improvement” Program. The applicants were selected because of their demonstrated efforts in affecting positive change for the youth of the greater Rockford area. Organizations and their award amounts include:

Illinois Jets Track and Field Organization $1500

Owen Blue Bonnets 4-H Club of the University of Illinois Extension Office/Winnebago County $1500

TEPEYAC (Mexican Folk Dance Group) $1000

YMCA Camp Winnebago $1500

MYAC will present the awards to recipients on Monday, May 12, 2010 during City Council. Presentations will be made during Officers Reports.

Future grants will be awarded quarterly. Individual youth or groups of youth are encouraged to apply,
as well as organizations or programs that support youth related activities. Deadline for submission for the Spring grant is Friday, June 11 by 6:00pm. For complete details, grant schedule and an application packet, email requests to the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council at

Formed in 2006 by the City of Rockford Human Services Department and the Mayor’s Office, MYAC is currently comprised of area high school youth Mark Blaser (chair), Patrick Schiller (vice-chair), Jake Schneider (treasurer), Aaron Gesmer (secretary), Lashay Hamilton, Zandie Shields, and Evan Weyrauch.

MYAC’s mission is “To engage and empower Rockford’s high school youth to affect positive change for themselves, their families and their community.”

Funds are provided by the City of Rockford Human Services Department, the Community Services Block Grant/American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
