Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Receives Distinguished Service Award

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS – The 200 Club of Bergen County yesterday honored Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Richard Riotto at its 24th Annual Valor Luncheon. Officer Riotto, along with two Saddle Brook Police Officers, received the Distinguished Service Award for their actions taken at the scene of an accident on the afternoon of Dec. 17, 2009.

Last December, Officer Riotto was off duty and traveling south on Fifth Street in Saddle Brook when he came to the scene of a motor vehicle accident that had just occurred. A minivan had missed a bend in the road at Victor Street and hit a parked vehicle, trapping an 8-year-old boy between two cars parked in a driveway. Officer Riotto tried to communicate with the child but did not receive a response. By that time, two Saddle Brook Police Officers had arrived on the scene, and along with an unidentified bystander the four men lifted the vehicle and removed the boy from the wheel well. The boy was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center and has since recovered from his injuries.

Bergen County Sheriff Leo McGuire and UnderSheriffs Ralph Rivera and Sharon McDonald attended the ceremony to commend Officer Riotto for his heroic efforts.

“I am so proud of Officer Riotto for going above and beyond the call of duty on this fateful day,” Sheriff McGuire said. “This young boy is alive today thanks in large part to Rich’s quick thinking. He showed true heroism in the face of a potential tragedy and is an asset to the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office. We salute you, Officer Riotto.”

Officer Riotto has been a member of the Bergen County’s Sheriff’s Office since 2002 and is currently assigned to the Warrant Unit of the Detective Bureau at the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. He lives in Elmwood Park.

The 200 Club of Bergen County is committed to supporting Bergen County Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS personnel and their families in the event of death or serious injury in the line of duty. The organization’s Valor Awards Ceremony recognizes men and women that have given of themselves above and beyond the call of duty in the service of Law Enforcement, Fire or Emergency Medical Services.
