Police activity: Recent Residential Burglary in Kensington Estates. Lemont PD gives tips to protect your home.

Keeping your Home Safe While You are Away

If you are leaving on vacation or a business trip, have a trusted neighbor watch your home. Give the trusted neighbor detailed contact information for emergencies.

If you give them a key, ask them not to label with your name and address, in case they get into the wrong hands. If you give them your garage code, do change the code on your return.

Request they park one of their vehicles in your drive, if you are taking yours on the trip, to make it look like someone is present in the residence. If you are not taking your vehicle, park it where you regularly park outside. Any vehicle left outside should be moved occasionally while you are away.

Ask them to bring in your mail and newspapers promptly. Have the lawn mowed/snow shoveled when appropriate. Put timers on lights and TV’s, as well as exterior lights.

Call 911 to report suspicious activity immediately. You can report anonymously.

The Lemont Police Department has a free Vacation Watch program, but nothing replaces a trusted neighbor checking your home for you.

The Lemont Police Department has twelve active Neighborhood Watch programs. To join an existing program or to start one for your neighborhood, contact Sgt. Therese Thompson at 630-257-2229.
