Crystal Lake PD has been receiving reports of hacked email accounts. Please refer to the Nixle e-mail for details.
The Crystal Lake Police Department has recently received reports from residents that control of thier email account was taken over, and diverted to another account. The suspects then will send an email to those listed in the victims email address book. The suspects would send an email indicating that the victim is out of the country and in jail. The victim would then request money to be sent over seas so they can post bond. The intended targets in the address book would be able to send a reply message via email but would then be intercepted by the suspects.
The email will contain specific information of an actual family member or friend requesting the money, when in fact, the victim is not under arrest, nor are they out of the country. Crystal Lake Police ask residents to monitor their email for any suspicious activity or lack of activity for that matter. If you suspect in the future that you are not receiving the email, or you notice that friends or family state they sent you email that you never received, please be aware that your identity could be in the process of being stolen or you might soon be the potential victim of a financial scam.
