Petaluma PD Assists in Coordinated Steamer Landing Clean-up

We know that access to clean, safe trails, parks, and open spaces is important to our community, and it’s important to us too.

This week, Petaluma Police Officers partnered with the City of Petaluma Public Works and Water teams to address ongoing health, safety, and environmental concerns at Steamer Landing Park. Officers assisted in coordination with City crews to ensure cleanup logistics and the removal of abandoned furniture, trash, debris, and other large items to help restore impacted areas for community use. Addressing ongoing concerns in areas such as Steamer Landing Park often requires coordination amongst multiple City departments and, when enforcement action is necessary, police resources. Officers and City staff must also follow applicable legal requirements, including providing appropriate notice and due process before certain property can be removed.

Our approach to addressing quality-of-life concerns is rooted in a service-first model, prioritizing outreach, resources, and assistance whenever possible. Beginning last week, our SAFE Team and partners at HomeFirst conducted outreach in the area to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with available services and support. HomeFirst focuses on housing assistance, homelessness prevention, and connecting individuals with resources, while our SAFE Team provides crisis response and support for individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, and other challenges.

We recognize the importance of maintaining clean, safe, vibrant, and inviting parks, trails, and open spaces for everyone to enjoy. Accumulated debris and abandoned materials can create public health, environmental, and fire safety concerns for individuals in the area and the surrounding community.

Through continued collaboration, proactive outreach, and coordinated cleanup efforts, we remain committed to addressing these challenges with compassion while preserving the shared spaces that make Petaluma special.
