The Santa Maria Police Department (SMPD) is preparing to launch its much-anticipated Artificial Intelligence (AI) non-emergency call-taking program on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The program will begin with a soft launch, allowing the department to test the system and monitor its performance in real time as it works to improve service and reduce wait times for community members.
The new system, powered by Hyper, is designed to help streamline non-emergency calls by directing callers to the appropriate police resources, providing requested information, or connecting them with a dispatcher when needed.
During the initial soft launch, SMPD will closely monitor the system to evaluate its performance and ensure calls are handled appropriately.
Which Number Should You Call?
- Emergency: 9-1-1: Call 9-1-1 for an immediate threat to life or property, a crime in progress, a serious injury, a fire, or a medical emergency.
- Non-Emergency: (805) 928-3781: Call the Santa Maria Police Department’s non-emergency line to report past crimes, request information, make a report, or seek assistance when there is no immediate emergency.
Community members are encouraged to continue using 9-1-1 for emergencies and the non-emergency line for routine police matters.
The Santa Maria Police Department’s implementation of this technology is another step toward exploring innovative ways to improve accessibility and service to the community while maintaining the department’s commitment to public safety.
