The City of Hoboken is under a National Weather Service (NWS) flood watch through 2 a.m. tomorrow, with the potential for flooding caused by excessive rainfall.  

The NWS is forecasting multiple rounds of heavy downpours and thunderstorms into the late evening hours, with average rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches, and peak rainfall rates as high as 2 to 3 inches per hour. Residents are reminded that the City can experience flooding in low-lying, flood-prone areas if more than 0.8 inches of rain per hour falls, particularly around high tide, which is at approximately 3 p.m. 

Barricades in place; Do not move or go around barricades 

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management (OEM), Signal and Traffic Division, and Hoboken Police have staged barricades in low-lying, flood-prone areas, and will deploy them as needed.  

DO NOT drive around or move barricades. They are there for your safety, and in some cases, can prevent wake waters that cause even greater damage. Floodwaters can be deeper than they appear and cause vehicles to stall. This can impact emergency response times. Residents should not walk or drive through floodwater. 

High winds possible; Secure outdoor objects 

Strong winds are also possible, and residents are advised to secure loose objects outside or bring them inside. Contractors have been notified by OEM to secure their sites as a precaution.

Report clogged catch basins 

Clogged catch basins can significantly impede drainage capacity during heavy rainfall events and lead to more severe flooding. 

Residents should report clogged catch basins to the NHSA hotline at (866) 689-3970.    

Summer Fun at Shipyard Park rescheduled  

Tonight’s Family Fun at Shipyard Park Storytime with Harmonica Sunbeam has been rescheduled to Aug. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
