Independence Day Fireworks Result in Multiple Fires

4th of July Fireworks Lead to Four Citations
While many celebrated responsibly this Fourth of July, illegal fireworks still kept our officers, dispatchers, and firefighters busy. Over the holiday, the Petaluma Police Department received more than 60 fireworks-related calls (up from 47 calls last year), issued four fireworks citations, confiscated numerous fireworks, and are investigating two fires believed to have been caused by illegal aerial fireworks.

In one incident, illegal fireworks ignited multiple brush fires near the SMART tracks. In another, an aerial firework caught a residential fence on fire. Thanks to the quick response from Petaluma Police and Petaluma Fire, both fires were contained before they spread further.

It's pretty much always fire season here. Illegal fireworks don't just break the law, they can start a fire in seconds and put lives, homes, and first responders at risk. Thank you to everyone who celebrated safely and responsibly. If you have information about either fire, please contact the Petaluma Police Department non-emergency line (707) 778-4372.
