Update #5 – VICTIM CONDITION UPDATE AND SUSPECT IDENTIFIED – Investigation (500 block of West 14th Street):

Police have identified the two victims of this incident as 19-year-old males. The 19-year-old male who remains hospitalized is listed in critical but stable condition. The name of the victim who succumbed to his injuries will be released at a later time.
 
The suspect in this incident has been identified as 23-year-old John Wallace-Bey of New Castle. Wallace-Bey was taken into custody in Philadelphia last night and is pending extradition to Delaware.
 
He will be charged with the following offenses:

  • Murder (First Degree)
  • Attempted Murder (First Degree)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony – Two Counts
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
This investigation remains active and ongoing, and further information will be released as soon as possible.
 
The Wilmington Police Department Victim Services Unit is available to provide support, information and referrals to those who are victims of crime, and can be reached at (302) 576-3622. Additionally, the WPD Youth Response Unit is available to provide free counseling and services to children and their families who have been exposed to potentially traumatizing events, and can be reached at (302) 576-3183.
 
Update 4 (June 16):
One of the two gunshot victims in this incident has succumbed to their injuries. Further information on the other victim’s condition, and the identity of both victims, is being withheld at this time out of respect for their families and as notifications are made.
 
The lockdown at the hospital has been lifted and police personnel have been clearing from the scene.
 
The suspect in this incident, a 23-year-old male, has been taken into custody in Philadelphia, and charges and extradition to Delaware are pending.
 
Our preliminary investigation has determined that this was a targeted, isolated incident.

A press briefing will take place at 7:30 pm at the Wilmington Police headquarters (300 N Walnut St).

At this time, police have located two gunshot victims. The hospital remains locked down and police continue to ask the public to avoid the area.

A temporary media staging area is being established at Delaware Avenue and Jefferson Street. A formal briefing will take place at Wilmington Police headquarters later today.

Wilmington Police are on scene of a shooting incident that occurred at the Wilmington Hospital in the 500 block of West 14th Street. The public is asked to avoid the area, and we will issue further updates as soon as possible.
