NJDEP to begin construction Monday on Washington & 14th Streets
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has announced the next phase in its Rebuild by Design - Hudson River project will move to Washington Street and 14th Street on or about Monday, Sept. 15. During this phase of construction, NJDEP crews will perform critical utility and construction work to further construction of the Resist-North structure, designed to safeguard portions of Hoboken against storm surge flooding.
This phase of work requires a full closure of the sidewalk and parking lane on the west side of Washington Street between 14th Street and the alleyway south of 15th Street. Additionally, the right-hand turning lane from southbound Washington Street onto 14th Street will be eliminated for the duration of this phase of the project.
The northern crosswalk across Washington Street at 14th Street will remain open during daytime hours but will be closed to pedestrians for utility work overnight. Bike and travel lanes will remain open on Washington Street. Access will be maintained to businesses in the impacted area.
Work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for the duration of the project. Overnight work will occur as needed near the corner of Washington Street at 14th Street. This phase of the project is anticipated to last approximately four months.
Hoboken to host annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial Service tonight
All members of the public are invited to attend the City of Hoboken’s annual September 11th Interfaith Memorial Service tonight, Sept.11, at 5 p.m. in the northwest area of Pier A Park next to the City's 9/11 Memorial.
The memorial is aligned in the direction of the World Trade Center site and includes a steel beam base with a glass panel for each of the 56 Hoboken residents lost on Sept. 11, 2001. Each panel is engraved with a name and is illuminated at night. The memorial is located within the grove of ginkgo trees which are also aligned with the World Trade Center that were planted in 2002 as a living memorial. The perimeter of the grove includes steel plates on the ground engraved with quotes from those who were there on that fateful day.
Take the Washington Street Bench Survey
The City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Business Alliance today launched an online survey seeking the public's input on new potential street furniture on Washington Street. Hoboken community members can provide feedback on what style of benches they would like installed and suggest potential locations for bench placement via the survey which can be found at https://arcg.is/1uiL5j0. The survey is scheduled to close on Thursday, Sept 25, at 7 p.m.
Survey results will be used to guide future street furniture installations on Washington Street through a partnership with the Hoboken Business Alliance as outlined in its Streetscape Plan.
Attend public meeting and provide feedback on Hoboken’s use of CDBG funds
Hoboken community members are invited to a public meeting on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. in the ground floor conference room of City Hall, 94 Washington St. (entrance on Newark Street), to share feedback on the City’s progress in utilizing funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
This meeting is part of the City’s annual reporting process for the CDBG program, which provides federal funding to support community development initiatives. To remain eligible for these funds, Hoboken must prepare and make available the Program Year 2024 Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER). The CAPER evaluates how well the City has met the goals outlined in its 2020–2024 Five-Year Consolidated Plan and its 2024 Annual Action Plan. For Program Year 2024, Hoboken allocated $1,057,610.00 in CDBG funding.
Residents are encouraged to review the draft CAPER and provide input during the public comment period, which ends on Sept. 22. The draft report is available online at: hobokennj.gov/resources/community-development-block-grant-program.
Written comments will also be accepted and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Sept. 22 to Cathleen Wolf at [email protected] or via mail at 94 Washington St.
