PATH announced today that from 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, the Hoboken PATH station will be closed for urgent repairs to the track and interlocking system that enables PATH trains to switch tracks and access different platforms at the station.

The 11:40 p.m. 33 St-bound PATH train will arrive at Hoboken at 11:56 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, before the station closes for the interlocking repairs.

The 11:38 p.m. Journal Square-bound train will arrive at Hoboken at 11:57 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, before the station closes.

Transportation Alternatives

During this closure, the Port Authority has coordinated with NJ TRANSIT, NY Waterway, and other transportation partners to provide alternative transportation options for commuters and PATH customers.

The City continues to collaborate with all transportation agencies and stakeholders to help minimize disruptions during the closure. Residents are encouraged to leave extra travel time, explore travel alternatives, and prepare for increased traffic around Hoboken Terminal due to additional buses. Please be aware, the Hoboken Terminal Hop pick-up and drop-off location and the Taxi Stand will be temporarily moved to River Street between Hudson Place and Newark Street. See below for more information on the Hop relocation.

The Port Authority will provide the following transportation alternatives, which are ADA-accessible, for PATH customers:

Cross-honored ferry service via New York Waterway:

  • Special $3 PATH ferry ticket available for use at the PATH/NJ TRANSIT station terminal and also at the 14th Street terminal in Hoboken, with service to Manhattan via the Brookfield Place/Battery Park City terminal and via Midtown/West 39th Street terminal. New York Waterway ferry schedules are available here.
  • To accommodate PATH riders, New York Waterway will also provide additional service to/from Hoboken:
    • On Friday, Aug. 29, from 6:35 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 2:50 p.m. to 7 p.m., ferries will operate every 15 minutes from the PATH/NJ TRANSIT station terminal in Hoboken to West 39th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
    • On Friday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., ferries will operate every 20 minutes from both ferry terminals in Hoboken to West 39th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
    • From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Labor Day Monday, ferries will operate between the PATH/NJ TRANSIT station terminal and West 39th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

Free PATH shuttle bus service:

  • Frequent shuttle buses connecting Hoboken riders to PATH service at Newport and Exchange Pl stations.
  • Hoboken’s pickup location will be on the southside of Hudson Place between Hudson Street and River Street

Supplemental bus service to enhance NJ TRANSIT’s No. 126 Route:

  • NJ TRANSIT will add buses to its No. 126 bus route to ease connections between the Hoboken station and the Midtown Bus Terminal.

Free cross-honoring on NJ TRANSIT Rail:

  • NJ TRANSIT rail service will cross-honor PATH customers between Hoboken, Secaucus, New York Penn and Newark Penn stations. Customers can show their PATH fare card to ride.

Supplemental NJ TRANSIT Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service:

  • The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail will cross-honor PATH customers between Hoboken, Newport and Exchange Pl, where customers can then connect to PATH service to 33 St and WTC.

HOP drop-off and taxi stand relocated

During the closure, both the Hoboken Terminal Hop pickup and drop-off location and the taxi stand will be temporarily moved to the east side of River Street between Hudson Place and Newark Street.

The usual south side location of Hudson Place will be used for PATH shuttles to Exchange Place and Newport PATH stations during the PATH station closure.

Citi Bike stations will also be accessible during this time. Check the Citi Bike / Lyft apps for bicycle and docking station availability.

PATH Construction Activities

According to PATH, the interlocking, which was installed during the station’s month-long closure in February, has experienced mechanical failures in recent weeks due to design issues. The new interlocking replaced an older 35-year-old crossover slip switch that allowed trains to access the station’s three tracks and was installed with the intention of improving flexibility and reliability for trains as they enter and exit the station. PATH made emergency repairs to partially restore service to the station, allowing trains to reach two of the station’s three platforms at slower speeds and reduced service frequency out of an abundance of caution. PATH has stated that these long-term repairs to the interlocking will enable the return of more frequent train service during peak hours.

This interlocking is a custom-designed component unique to its location outside the Hoboken station and the PATH system. Its location includes sharp turns and narrow tunnel walls, further complicating design and repair efforts. To complete long-term repairs, new parts needed to be fabricated and shipped by the interlocking’s manufacturer. During the station’s Labor Day weekend closure, new parts will be installed and rigorously tested. PATH scheduled this critical repair over the Labor Day weekend, which historically is a lower ridership period.

PATH apologizes for the inconvenience.
