Reminder: PSE&G Modernization Program to close portion of eastbound Newark Street beginning tomorrow
Residents are reminded that beginning tomorrow, Aug. 6, PSE&G will be upgrading infrastructure on Newark Street between Henderson and Grove Streets. The work is part of the PSE&G Gas System Modernization Project and involves replacing older gas mains and service lines with stronger, more durable materials, to support a safer, cleaner, and more reliable gas system.
To complete the work, eastbound Newark Street will be closed between Henderson and Grove Streets, during the working hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Eastbound traffic will be diverted onto Grove Street and detoured onto 18th Street and Marin Boulevard/Henderson Street, to continue heading eastbound on Newark Street/Observer Highway.
Detour signs will be posted, and Hoboken Police will be on site to assist with traffic flow and pedestrian safety. Westbound traffic will not be impacted.
This work is anticipated to last approximately three weeks and is expected to be complete prior to the upcoming closure of Marin Boulevard for ongoing construction of the resist feature of the DEP’s Rebuild by Design – Hudson River project to protect Hoboken from storm surge flooding. The Marin Boulevard closure, originally scheduled for early July, has been delayed due to unforeseen subsurface conditions which were identified during test pitting operations and require additional utility coordination, design, and procurement of materials.
