Deputies Arrest Convicted Arsonist After He Cuts Off His Ankle Monitor

DATE/TIME: July 21, 2025 at 1:42 a.m.

INCIDENT: PC 4532(b)(1) Electronic Confinement Escape

LOCATION: 14500 Block of Schooner Drive, Helendale, CA

SUSPECT(S): Derik Wayne Sibby Applebee, Age 29, Resident of Helendale

VICTIM(S): State of California

SUMMARY: Derik Wayne Sibby Applebee was recently sentenced to 90 days for a felony arson offense. Applebee was committed to the Work Release/Weekend Program and on July 9, 2025, Applebee reported to the Work Release to serve his sentence. Applebee acknowledged the rules, regulations, and requirement to wear a GPS monitoring device on his ankle.

On Monday, July 21, 2025, at approximately 1:42 a.m., the GPS monitoring system received a master tamper notification on Applebee’s GPS tracking device, indicating the monitoring device had been removed from his ankle. The last known location of Applebee before the tracking device received the tamper alert was at Applebee’s residence in Helendale, in the County of San Bernardino.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at about 9:18 a.m., Work Release Deputies Ramirez and Strathmann arrived at a home in Helendale and located Applebee in a bedroom, along with the GPS tracking device, with the ankle strap cut. Applebee was arrested and transported to the High Desert Detention Center, where he was booked for P.C. 4532 (b)(1), Electronic Confinement Escape.

The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors authorizes the Sheriff to administer a Work Release program. While providing manual labor to improve or maintain public facilities, inmates may re-establish ties with their family, return to work with their previous employers, and serve the community on their non-scheduled workdays. Inmates who have been sentenced to Work Release by the courts also have the option of participating in Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center's Electronic Confinement Program (ECP). It is the duty of the Work Release division to ensure that all commitments are held accountable to all California State Laws while participating in the program to provide safety and security for the community.
