IMPD Officer Arrested After Special Investigations Unit Investigation

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer has been arrested for official misconduct and harassment following an IMPD Special Investigation Unit investigation.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, IMPD’s North District received an email from the officer’s former spouse with concerns about the behavior of IMPD Officer Nicholas Cauley. IMPD North District referred the allegations to the IMPD Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to investigate.

Based on the probable cause affidavit, SIU detectives found that Cauley repeatedly contacted his former spouse despite her numerous requests for Cauley to stop. Detectives also learned that while on duty and operating a police vehicle, Cauley drove to his former spouse’s place of employment. At one point, he also used his law enforcement authority to look up her license plate information.

On Friday July 18th, 2025 IMPD Violent Crimes Unit detectives arrested Cauley for 2 counts of Official Misconduct, Level Six Felony and 1 count of Harassment, a Class B Misdemeanor. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center for booking.

Cauley is a nine-year officer of IMPD and was most recently assigned to North District. Cauley is on administrative leave, pending additional review by the chief of police. His police issued equipment has been collected and his law enforcement authority has been suspended.

IMPD detectives have been working with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office on this case and will continue their collaboration.

“The trust our community places in us is built on accountability and integrity. When any officer violates that trust, it’s our duty to act quickly and transparently,” said Chief Chris Bailey. We are committed to working closely with the prosecutor to ensure this case is investigated appropriately.”

Cauley, as with any person arrested, should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
