Willow Avenue Vision Zero Safety Improvement meeting tonight

The City of Hoboken and Hudson County invite community members to participate in a virtual meeting tonight, June 25, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. to provide feedback on potential Vision Zero safety improvements along Willow Avenue between 11th and 16th Streets.

Proposed Vision Zero improvements could include curb extensions to shorten crossing distances and improve visibility, high-visibility crosswalks, rapid flashing beacons, pedestrian refuge islands, leading pedestrian interval timers at signalized intersections to allow for more crossing time without vehicle interaction, protected bike lanes, speed radar feedback signs, and more.

NJDEP virtual meeting tomorrow, June 26, for the pending July 7th 15th St. closure

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will cohost a virtual community meeting, on June 26 at 6 p.m., to discuss the next phase of construction for the Rebuild by Design – Hudson River Project (RBDH), which will require the full closure of 15th Street from approximately Park Avenue to Bloomfield Street starting next month. During the meeting, the NJDEP will present traffic mitigation and construction plans to the community.

This phase of the project aims to install underground infrastructure for a sliding flood gate to help prevent storm surge flooding from the Hudson River. During Hurricane Sandy, this type of flooding inundated the City with over 500 million gallons of water causing more than $100 million in private property damage.

The construction across 15th Street at Garden Street will close 15th Street from Park Avenue to Bloomfield Street to vehicles. Parking garage access for the at 1499 Park Ave. and LAZ Parking garages will be maintained. Temporary curb use changes, such as new pick-up and drop-off zones for local schools and designated loading zones for deliveries and resident shuttles, will also be implemented.

Sidewalk access on the south side of 15th Street between Park Avenue and Garden Street, and Garden Street and Bloomfield Street, and the west side of Garden Street from 14th Street to 15th Street will be maintained for residents and students during the road closure.

Temporary emergency access to the area will also be maintained via 14th and Garden Streets as coordinated with the Hoboken Fire Department, NJDEP has scheduled temporary pedestrian access to a portion of the alleyway between Garden Street and Bloomfield Street by June 27.

More information regarding the specific work, schedule, and associated mitigation measures will be discussed during the meeting and released in the coming days.

The RBDH project is a comprehensive flood protection system designed to safeguard portions of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Weehawken against storm surge while integrating flood-resistant infrastructure with new community amenities. In southern Hoboken, the Resist structure will be integrated into the urban landscape taking the form of wayfinding signage, planters, seating, public art, and more. In northern Hoboken, the Resist structure will run through the newly constructed Harborside Park, anticipated to be completed in 2027.

NJDEP to host virtual meeting on July 7 for Marin Blvd closure

The NJDEP will host a virtual community meeting on July 7 at 6 p.m. to discuss its next phase of construction in southern Hoboken, which will necessitate the closure of Marin Boulevard/Henderson Street between 18th Street in Jersey City and Observer Highway in Hoboken starting in July.

The full closure is necessary due to the location of the Resist structure’s gate crossing in the roadway as well as related site work, including the foundation work and micropile installation, and the size of the equipment needed to perform the construction. Additionally, the NJDEP work has scheduled construction to be conducted at the same time as NJ Transit’s flood prevention work for the Long Slip Fill and Rail Enhancement project in order to reduce the need for future closures of Henderson Street.

During the meeting, the NJDEP will present traffic mitigation and construction plans to the community.
