Madison Street Infrastructure Improvements Project UPDATE; New detours and closures announced

The City of Hoboken and the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) are moving into the next phase of the Madison Street Area Infrastructure Improvements Project to upgrade portions of Madison Street and alleviate on-street rainfall flooding between Ninth and 11th Streets. The project includes replacing existing inlets, sewers, and water lines as well as elevating roadways, curbs, and sidewalks along Madison Street. Improvements will also be made to Ninth and 11th Streets between Madison and Monroe Streets.

To facilitate this phase of construction, Madison Street will be closed 24/7 between Ninth and 10th Streets beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 9. The closure is anticipated to last approximately two months, weather permitting.

Additionally, starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 9, the intersection of Madison and 10th Streets will be closed to vehicles for approximately two weeks, weather permitting. This closure will affect the main entrance and exit to ShopRite on Madison Street at 10th Street. The Green HOP bus that currently stops at ShopRite will be re-routed while Madison Street is closed between Ninth and 10th Streets. The Senior HOP bus will continue to enter the Shoprite parking lot from Monroe Street and exit via the northern driveway onto Madison Street. Please note that the resident pick-up and drop-off location will be on the Monroe Street side of the store.

Upon the reopening of the Madison and 10th Street intersection, 10th Street will revert back to westbound-only, providing access to Madison Street between 10th and 11th Streets. That stretch of Madison Street is also expected to fully reopen at the same time.

Detour signs, variable message boards, and temporary no-parking signs will remain in place. Hoboken Police will assist with traffic direction and pedestrian safety from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

NHSA announced last month that the project was delayed due to unanticipated underground utility conflicts, weather delays, and unexpected utility lead times.
