Proactive traffic stop leads to arrest of convicted felon for being a felon in possession of a firearm, concealing a firearm after a felon

San Mateo, CA – On May 30, 2025, at 8:30 p.m., a San Mateo Police officer proactively stopped a vehicle driving in the area of S. Humboldt St and 3rd Ave due to the registered owner/occupant having an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. As the vehicle stopped, an adult male passenger, later identified as Jose Garciabarron, fled on foot with a satchel in his hand. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit with Garciabarron, who eventually stopped around the 1000 block of 2nd Ave, then appearing to access something inside of the satchel. Officers gave multiple commands for Garciabarron to stop accessing the satchel and comply, but Garciabarron failed to do so. Fearing Garciabarron may have been accessing a weapon, an officer deployed his Taser. During the deployment, Garciabarron threw the satchel over a nearby fence and continued to refuse commands. After an additional Taser deployment by the officer, Garciabarron complied and was taken into custody. A search of the recovered satchel revealed a loaded Glock pistol with a round in the chamber and a drum magazine containing 36 rounds. A records check showed the Glock was stolen out of Pike County. Garciabarron was also found to be a convicted felon and had two outstanding warrants. After receiving medical treatment, Garciabarron was transported to the San Mateo County Jail, where he was booked for his charges, without further incident.
