Extensive Investigation into the Disappearance of a Needles Woman Uncovers Her Murder and Leads to Suspect's Arrest

DATE: February 3, 2024

INCIDENT: PC 187(a) - Murder

LOCATION: Zoe Lane, Needles, CA

SUSPECT: Jared Winer, 44-year-old resident of Needles, CA

VICTIM: Tyna Castillo, 43-year-old resident of Needles, CA

SUMMARY: On Saturday, February 3, 2024, the reporting party contacted Colorado River Sheriff’s Station personnel and reported Tyna Castillo as a missing person. Castillo had not been heard from since December of 2023. The reporting party had sent Castillo several messages and did not receive responses. Colorado River Station deputies initiated a missing person investigation and entered Castillo as a missing person. Detectives from the Colorado River Station assisted deputies with the investigation into Castillo’s disappearance. However, Castillo was never located and her whereabouts remained unknown.

During the investigation, investigators received information indicating Castillo was possibly murdered on a residential property in the City of Needles. Detectives contacted witnesses and people of interest in Castillo’s disappearance and received poor cooperation. The case went cold, and Castillo was not located.

In September of 2024, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Cold Case Homicide Team assumed the investigation. Homicide Detectives Justin Carty and Malcom Page located and interviewed witnesses and gained information as to the location of Castillo’s remains. On March 5, 2025, after eight different search operations, detectives, with the assistance of Red Rock Search and Rescue, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue, Sheriff’s Human Remains Detection (HRD) dogs, San Bernardino County Public Works, and approximately 100 volunteers, located buried human remains in an open desert area, along the Colorado River in Needles. The remains were positively identified as Tyna Castillo. The investigation continued and it was determined Jared Winer caused Castillo’s death by gunshot.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Bullhead City Police Department arrested Winer, and he was booked into Mohave County Jail on unrelated charges. Carty and Page met with the San Bernardino County District Attorneys Office and a murder warrant was filed for Winer. Winer will be extradited to California on his murder charge following disposition of his outstanding criminal charges in Arizona.
