NYPD Funeral in Hoboken Thursday; Prepare for traffic & parking impacts

Hoboken native and NYPD Detective, John Edgar, will be laid to rest in Hoboken, on Thursday, April 24. Det. Edgar passed away on April 19, due to a 9/11 related illness. As his death is recognized as in the line of duty, he will receive a full NYPD “Inspectors Funeral.”

Det. Edgar was born and raised in Hoboken and attended Our Lady of Grace, before graduating from Hudson Catholic High School. He joined the NYPD on April 15, 1997, and was a proud member of the NYPD for nearly three decades. A highly decorated officer, he worked in several specialized units focused on gang and narcotics enforcement.

Although his career was based in New York, John’s heart never left Hoboken. He proudly continued a family tradition of law enforcement service spanning nearly 200 years. His father, both grandfathers, and numerous uncles and cousins served, or continue to serve, in the Hoboken Police Department and Hoboken Fire Department.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lawton-Turso Funeral Home, 633 Washington St. The funeral mass will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 404 Hudson St.
