On April 9, 2025, Homicide investigators responded to the parking lot of the Giant Discount Store located in the 2000 block of Durfee Avenue, in the city of South El Monte to investigate the death of Kourosh Yaghoubi, who was run over while confronting a shoplifter from his brother’s family owned, and operated store.

During the investigation, detectives located the vehicle used in this incident.  Through further investigation on Friday, April 18, 2025, they identified and arrested the driver of the vehicle, a Male juvenile 16 years of age.

The case is in the process of being presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office out of the East Los Angeles branch for their consideration of filing charges on the juvenile subject.  The investigation is ongoing as investigators are attempting to identify several other suspects who were seen in the vehicle during, and after the crime occurred.

Los Angeles County Homicide investigators are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a male adult. The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at approximately 12:18 p.m.

Deputies from Temple Station responded to the 2000 block of Durfee Avenue Drive in the city of South El Monte regarding a hit-and-run at the family owned and operated “Giant Discount Store.” When deputies arrived on scene, they located a male adult suffering from blunt force trauma. 

The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.  

During their initial investigation, deputies learned the victim was visiting his brother’s place of business when a suspect entered the “Giant Discount Store” and stole merchandise. The victim chased the suspect into the parking lot and a physical altercation took place. During the altercation, a second suspect exited a dark colored sedan and also fought the vicitim.

The suspects then entered the sedan and deliberately struck the victim with the vehicle several times.

The vehicle fled in an unknown direction.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information at this time.
