Check your mail - Notice of additional Direct Energy billing discrepancy

The City of Hoboken is notifying residents about an additional billing discrepancy by Direct Energy, the City's former clean energy provider, during the month of December 2023. Please note, the City no longer utilizes Direct Energy and is now under contract with IDT Energy Services this year.

Check your mailbox! Affected residents will receive a letter in the mail notifying them if they were impacted, along with a subsequent mailed refund check to correct the error.

What to Expect:

  • Refund letters will be mailed directly to affected residents.
  • No contact will be made via phone, email, or in person.
  • Refund checks will reflect the overcharged amount, with the average December 2023 refund check totaling $4.31.
  • Checks should arrive within two weeks of receiving a notification letter.

The City recently announced similar overcharges in December 2024. As such, the City's third-party administrator of the program will oversee an independent audit of Direct Energy's former Hoboken accounts, and the matter has been reported to the BPU.  Please note, ratepayers who participated in the program in both December of 2023 and December of 2024, will receive one mailed letter notification and one refund check for the total amount owed.

The program is an opt-out program as required by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities as stated in N.J.A.C. 14:4-6. Please note, residents can opt-out of the program at any time and there are no fees associated with opting out of the program.
