Father’s False Confession Leads Investigators to Arrest Son After Attempted Cover-Up

Crash Investigators conducted a thorough examination of evidence related to a recent pedestrian hit and run motor vehicle crash. It was revealed that Byron A. Jones, 52, of Mays Landing, fabricated a confession to his involvement in the crash.

Utilizing digital forensic analysis along with traditional investigative methods, Crash Investigators determined that Amir A. Jones, 20, of Mays Landing, was the operator of the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The crash left the victim, Syed Hoque, 25, of Absecon, in life-threatening condition. Amir Jones failed to seek emergency services, leaving the scene. A passerby discovered the victim and a deceased canine in the roadway and promptly called 9-1-1.

Charges -

Amir A. Jones was charged with the following offenses:

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Serious Bodily Injury
  • Endangering an Injured Victim
  • Motorist Hitting a Domestic Animal Required to Stop
  • Failure to Report an Accident
  • Numerous related motor vehicle offenses

Byron A. Jones was charged with the following offenses:
  • Hindering Apprehension of Another
  • False Reports to Law Enforcement Authorities

This incident stems from a crash that occurred on Saturday, November 30, 2024, shortly after midnight. A man and his dog were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue; the driver fled the scene. Tragically, the dog was killed, and the man, identified as Syed Hoque, was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A short time later, a passerby discovered the victim and promptly called 9-1-1. During the investigation, officers located a vehicle matching the description and initiated a motor vehicle stop. Initially, Byron A. Jones was arrested for his alleged involvement, later revealed to be a cover-up.
